Christopher R. Jones is the Lee County

Commissioner of the Revenue

Christopher R. Jones is the Lee County Commissioner of the Revenue. Chris was first elected to serve the citizens of Lee County in November 2011 and began working in the office January 1, 2012. Mr. Jones is now serving in his fourth term as Lee County’s Commissioner of the Revenue.

Chris is the son of Steve and Deborah Jones of Jonesville and is a lifelong resident of Lee County. He is a 1997 Cum Laude graduate of Lee High School. After graduating, Chris began pursuing a career in Real Estate and, in 1999, became a licensed Real Estate Agent with Lee Auction Company of Pennington Gap. He continued to further his education and, in 2002, graduated from Mountain Empire Community College as a Deans List graduate with a Certificate of Real Estate Studies. During that same year, Chris became licensed as an Associate Real Estate Broker with Lee Auction Company, which is a position he continues to hold to this day.

In 2004, Chris obtained his trainee Real Estate Appraiser License and worked as an apprentice under Arthur Livesay of Pennington Gap. During that same year, he went to work in the ad valorem mass appraisal field with Old Dominion Appraisal Company. In 2004 - 2005 he helped conduct the Russell County, VA Ad Valorem Property Reassessment. Chris continued to work for Old Dominion Appraisal Company as they conducted the Ad Valorem Reassessment for the City of Norton, VA in 2007.

In 2006, Mr. Jones obtained his Licensed Residential Appraisal License and opened his own small business, Chris Jones Appraisals. His business provided real property appraisal services for numerous banks, mortgage companies, attorneys, and individuals. He obtained his Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser License in 2007 and later went on to gain certification as an FHA Certified Appraiser.

In 2014, Chris gained certification as a Master Commissioner of the Revenue (MCR) by the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. In 2018, he earned the Certified Assessment Evaluator (CAE) designation from the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO). The CAE Designation is generally regarded as the highest designation one can achieve in the world of property assessment. The CAE designation recognizes professionalism and competency in a wide range of matters covering property valuation for tax purposes, property tax administration, and property tax policy. Mr. Jones was also the recipient of The President’s Award by the Commissioners of the Revenue Association of Virginia in 2018.

Chris has served and continues to serve on numerous boards and associations. Mr. Jones serves on the fundraising committee for the Lee County Remote Area Medical Clinic and was the committee Chairman in 2014. He serves on the MECC Lee County Endowed Scholarship Committee and is also a former board member of the Mountain Empire Community College Foundation. Chris is also an active member of the Commissioner of the Revenue Association of Virginia (CRAV). In 2015 and 2016, he served as Vice-Chairman and in, 2017 and 2018, he served as Chairman of the Southwest District of the Commissioner of the Revenue Association. Mr. Jones is also a member of the BAI Municipal Software Users Group. He served this group in 2016 as Vice President and served in 2017 and 2018 as President. Chris currently serves as the 1st Vice President of the Commissioner of the Revenue Association of Virginia, and is on pace to become the President of the Association in the fall of 2024.

Other professional associations in which he is active include: the Virginia Association of Assessing Officers (VAAO), the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO), the Virginia Association of Locally Elected Constitutional Officers (VALECO) and the Virginia Association of Local Tax Auditors (VALTA). Chris is also a member of the Lee County Historical and Genealogical Society, the Jonesville Lions Club, the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Lee County Farm Bureau.

Agriculture is something that is very important to our area and something that Chris has proudly been involved with his entire life. Mr. Jones is an active beef cattle producer, former burley tobacco grower and currently serves as Treasurer of the Lee County FFA Alumni Chapter. Chris is a member of Lone Branch Baptist Church in Jonesville and he has been happily married to his wife Andrea since 2005. Together they have three daughters - Allie, Emma Kate, and Sadie.
